Ecosystem-based Management of Coral Reef Fisheries

چکیده

Issue 1: MPA benefits to fisheries It is crucial to avoid ‘overselling’ MPAs on the basis that increased catches due to spillover and enhanced recruitment from spawning in the MPA will more than make up for lost fishing grounds, increased effort and higher costs of fishers displaced from the MPA. To date, this assumption has never been proven; and spillover is generally measured as movement of biomass out of an MPA. It is the net difference that makes the true measurement of spillover and has only ever been demonstrated for one species in one location.

Critical thresholds and tangible targets for ecosystem-based management of coral reef fisheries.

Sustainably managing ecosystems is challenging, especially for complex systems such as coral reefs. This study develops critical reference points for sustainable management by using a large empirical dataset on the coral reefs of the western Indian Ocean to investigate associations between levels of target fish biomass (as an indicator of fishing intensity) and eight metrics of ecosystem state....

Current and Future Sustainability of Island Coral Reef Fisheries

Overexploitation is one of the principal threats to coral reef diversity, structure, function, and resilience [1, 2]. Although it is generally held that coral reef fisheries are unsustainable [3-5], little is known of the overall scale of exploitation or which reefs are overfished [6]. Here, on the basis of ecological footprints and a review of exploitation status [7, 8], we report widespread u...

Artificial Coral Reefs as a Method of Coral Reef Fish Conservation

2 Biodiversity is an important factor in all healthy ecosystems. Coral reef ecosystems support an incredibly diverse community of fish species. As coral reefs are in decline due to a combination of factors such as climate change and over fishing, the species which are being supported by the reef are at risk. In particular, coral reef fish communities have been shown to be in decline. Coral reef...

Management Strategy Evaluation Applied to Coral Reef Ecosystems in Support of Ecosystem-Based Management

Ecosystem modelling is increasingly used to explore ecosystem-level effects of changing environmental conditions and management actions. For coral reefs there has been increasing interest in recent decades in the use of ecosystem models for evaluating the effects of fishing and the efficacy of marine protected areas. However, ecosystem models that integrate physical forcings, biogeochemical and...

Coral–algal phase shifts alter fish communities and reduce fisheries production

Anthropogenic stress has been shown to reduce coral coverage in ecosystems all over the world. A phase shift towards an algae-dominated system may accompany coral loss. In this case, the composition of the reef-associated fish assemblage will change and human communities relying on reef fisheries for income and food security may be negatively impacted. We present a case study based on the Raja ...

Herbivory and the resilience of Caribbean coral reefs: knowledge gaps and implications for management

Herbivory is a key process on coral reefs that can facilitate reef-building corals by excluding algae that otherwise negatively impact coral settlement, growth, and survivorship. Over the last several de cades, coral cover on Caribbean reefs has declined precipitously. On many reefs, large structurally complex corals have been replaced by algae and other non-reef-building organisms, resulting i...
